Join me as I share some of my thoughts (or at least one thought) on mental strength, and how to have a stronger mentality that is focused on Christ!
Honestly guys, the only reason I decided to write about mental strength was because I feel like I need to learn about this in my own life. Which means that right now, I don’t know much about it. But, as I was typing a few Instagram posts the other day, I had a few thoughts about it…so here we go!
What do a lot of people do when they don’t know about something? They google it. And yeah, I definitely fall into the category of ‘those people’. So as I was thinking about mental strength, I decided to look up the definition.
You can look it up for yourself, but the main definition you’ll find is “Mental toughness…is any set of positive attributes that helps a person to cope with difficult situations.” Basically, a strong sense of positivity that helps you through anything you’re going through at the moment.
Sounds pretty cool, right? I wish I had a bit more of that!
In my own words, I decided that mental strength was an ‘I will’ instead of an ‘I can’t’. But as I thought about it more, I realized that’s not the case at all.
A lot of people think that mental strength is something that happens inside your head. It’s something that turns on up there and you say “I can DO this!! I am STRONG!!”
But, my friends, this is where our thinking goes wrong.
Yeah, sure, some people can get by by believing in themselves, but honestly? I don’t think that anyone can do the best that they can do without realizing one thing first.
We can’t do it.
Now I know this sounds really strange, but hang on, okay? I’m not saying that we should walk around saying ‘I can’t I can’t I can’t’ underneath our breath. What I’m saying is, we’ve got to understand that our minds are weak by themselves and we cannot perform to the best of our abilities without realizing this. We cannot get through any battle without first realizing that we cannot fight our battles alone.
In order to become the best we can be, we must first realize how much we need to depend on God. In the bible it says multiple times that he is our shield and our fortress. Fighting a spiritual battle without him is like running out into open fire, just believing that you can dodge every one. And that’s just crazy, right?
Psalm 91:4 says – “He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
Just think about some of these words for a minute. He is covering us with his feathers, giving us refuge under his wings, and being our shield through his faithfulness. This is something that we can’t just ignore! God is giving us the tools to fight and the means to have a strong mindset. Christ didn’t die on the cross so that you could ignore him and try to fight your battles alone. Christ died so that we could be set FREE! He died for us so that we didn’t have to fight, because he won the whole war! He has given us strength and courage when we had none, and he will continue to do so until the day we are with him.
THAT is mental strength.
Like I said, this is just one thing I’ve realized about mental strength in the past couple days. Hopefully sometime in the future, I’ll be able to write about it more! For now though, I think that this one thing is good for us to remember:)
