Smooth, rich, and ice cold, this chocolate protein recovery drink is refreshing, satisfying, and good for you too!
Right now, as cross country is starting to get into full swing, I am SO ready for colder weather. Not super cold, but just cold enough that I can get out of the house in jeans and a sweater and not get too hot. I’m also ready for colder weather because it’s getting to be really, really hot outside! Running season + Hot weather = unhappy Maddie.
After all these hot, terrible runs, I really need a recovery drink. Like chocolate milk. Except mom doesn’t buy chocolate milk…*sigh*
So I have to improvise. Instead of doing the usual chocolate milk trick to recover quickly after runs, I make this chocolate recovery drink. It’s got organic cocoa powder, applesauce, banana, protein powder…
Don’t get too freaked out by my weird ingredient choices. I promise I’m not crazy. Well, not too crazy. But these ingredients work! The sweetness of the applesauce and the banana make the chocolate flavor stand out so much more, and the cocoa powder gives it a deeper, richer flavor. Plus, did you know that organic cocoa powder is a SUPERFOOD? Basically meaning that it’s SUPER good for you!
Okay, confession time. Am I the only one that will like to eat bananas, but hates the flavor of banana in things? Like banana bread, or strawberry banana drinks? Because I really can’t stand bananas unless I just eat them plain.
But…
Since this smoothie has soooooo much chocolate flavor, I can taste the banana without it overpowering all the other flavors! Still skeptical? You can add peanut butter instead of the banana, and it tastes really good! I’ve done both, and both are delicious:)
This smoothie only makes enough for one person, so you’re not going to have tons of chocolate smoothie and not enough people to drink it. It’s super quick, super simple, and trust me, after this you’ll feel so much better!
Chocolate protein smoothie:
1/4 cup applesauce
1 banana, chopped
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
2 tbsp. organic cocoa powder
About 5 ice cubes
1/4 cup cashew milk*
Add in ingredients and blend thoroughly. Pour into a cup and serve right away. Serving size: 1
*You can use any type of milk for this. Another favorite of mine is coconut milk:)
