What I Think Worship REALLY Is

Worship is something that you probably do at church, but are you doing it the right way? I learned something about praising God recently that surprised me.

So I was going to string you on forever, trying to keep you on your toes wondering what worship REALLY is.

But, instead I’m just gonna spill it to ya. ‘Cause I mean, after being 2 weeks late I’m completely ready to just lay it all out. Hopefully you are, too!

Praise music has always meant so much to me. All my life, I’ve loved singing the words of the familiar hymns and songs that we sang in church. I have TONS of memories I could share with you!! There’s been so many times where I’ve felt God’s presence while lifting his name up. Whether singing alongside friends at camp around a fire, to praying out loud on a course before a big XC meet, I’ve learned that you can worship anywhere and at anytime of the day.

Recently, though, I met a person who challenged me and a lot of other teams about what it meant to worship. I had a whole week of listening to him talk about worship and how to write a good praise song. I LOVED hearing all the tips and tricks he had for writing songs, since I’ve tried starting some of my own recently. He’s written thousands of songs for huge Christian artists like Newsboys, and you really could tell that he knew what it meant to sing (or play) for Jesus.

Best. Teacher. EVER!!

Okay, I’m done freaking out now. Actually, the best thing I heard from him wasn’t necessarily about writing songs.

What really got to me was when he said this:

“Worship is about reminding others of an unbroken hope.”

Think about this for a minute. We are worshipping not only to praise God, but to remind others about a hope that will last forever! This, I think, is the key to not only worshipping in the best way, but also writing songs in the best way!

It gives a whole other level of joy to know that you CAN sing because we are free from our sin and shame! TRUE praise is reminding ourselves and others of the gospel. This is the way we worship: not just for us, but for others. Not just for us, but for God. To him be the glory!

Great message! Sometimes worship can be hard, but when you think of it as spreading hope to others while praising God– it becomes easier and more natural!

Dependence.

There’s a constant battle on where we place our dependence. Where will we choose to place our trust in the simplest and in the hardest of times? I depend too much for someone who is a natural leader. As an extrovert, I love taking charge, talking, and being the best I can be for everyone […]
